Installation
Handling, bending radius, pulling tension and termination practice.
More cable is damaged during installation than in service, and most of that damage is not visible from outside. Three limits govern the work: minimum bending radius, maximum pulling tension on the conductor, and maximum sidewall pressure where the cable bends around a sheave or a duct mouth. All three follow from the construction, so they are set before the cable arrives on site and cannot be renegotiated afterwards.
Ambient temperature at the time of pulling matters as well. Compounds that are flexible in service become stiff in the cold, and a cable pulled below its recommended installation temperature can crack insulation or split a sheath without any obvious sign at the time.
