Cable Engineering
Ratings, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand and derating.
This topic covers the calculations that sit behind a cable rating. Current-carrying capacity published in a table assumes reference conditions; ambient temperature, grouping with other circuits, soil thermal resistivity and burial depth each move that figure, and the corrections compound rather than average out.
Two further limits commonly decide a size before ampacity does. Voltage drop sets a maximum run length on low-voltage circuits, so the electrically correct conductor can still be too small for a long route. Short-circuit withstand sets a minimum conductor size from the prospective fault current and the time the protection takes to clear it.
