Scope

Voltage range: Follows the construction it is supplied on — 0.6/1 kV power, 450/750 V building wire, and the medium voltage range

Two different properties are grouped under this family, and they are not interchangeable. A flame retardant cable does not let a fire travel along it: the test is IEC 60332-3, in which a tray of cables is burned and the distance the flame propagates is measured. A fire resistant cable keeps working while it is being burned — a circuit-integrity property, tested by the international fire-resistance test IEC 60331.

Most projects need the first. Circuits that have to keep functioning during an evacuation — emergency lighting, fire pumps, alarm and public-address systems, lift and smoke-control supplies — need both.

Because both are properties of the sheath and of the barrier layers rather than a product in their own right, they are supplied as variants of the power and wiring families instead of as a separate range. In the data we hold they appear as the FR-PVC and ZR- prefixed versions of the low voltage and medium voltage power cable constructions and as the WDZ- variants of the wiring range, while halogen-free flame-retardant constructions carry the LSZH designations.

To quote we need to know which of the two properties the project calls for, the burn duration required if it is circuit integrity, the number of cores and the cross-section, whether metallic armour or a screen is needed, and the standard the project cites.

Key characteristics

  • Two properties, two different tests. Flame retardance stops fire travelling along the cable; circuit integrity keeps the circuit working while it is being burned. Ordering one and expecting the other is the commonest mistake in this category.
  • Supplied as variants of the standard power and wiring constructions rather than as a separate range: FR-PVC and ZR- versions of the power constructions, WDZ- versions of the building wire range, and halogen-free constructions for both.
  • Evidence is issued per construction. Certificate numbers are listed here with the scope and validity of each, and we attach the applicable one to the quotation.

Each size counted above carries its own dimensional and electrical figures in the tables further down this page. Intermediate sizes are manufactured to order.

Construction

Each entry is identified three ways: an international description, a construction code naming the material build-up, and a national type designation given for cross-reference only. Read the code string left to right — conductor, insulation, then screening, armour and sheath where fitted.

Photographs of builds from this family. Core count, armouring and sheath follow the specification of each order — the data sheet for your build is issued with the quotation.

  • Cable cut back at an angle with the black sheath opened out to a woven white bedding tape over four insulated cores in white filler

Black sheath opened at the cut, four cores laid out in white filler.

  • Orange sheathed cable opened out to green, blue and yellow insulated cores in white filler, over a woven white bedding tape

Orange sheath peeled back over the cores and filler.

  • Close-up of the cut end of an orange sheathed cable, the insulated cores laid open over a woven white bedding tape

Cut end close up — the wrap over the cores, and the copper under it.

  • Black sheathed cable with the green, blue and red insulated cores fanned apart over a woven white bedding tape

Cores fanned apart over the wrapped bedding.

  • Orange sheathed cable peeled back to green, yellow, blue and red insulated cores with bare copper ends

Cores taken down to bare copper at the cut.

  • Black sheathed cable with the printing running along the sheath, opened out to red, yellow and green insulated cores in white filler

The sheath print, and the cores underneath it.

On current ratings. The in-air and in-soil values in the tables above are catalogue figures for the construction listed. The rating available to your circuit depends on how it is installed — installation method, ambient temperature, soil thermal resistivity, burial depth and grouping. Send us your installation conditions and we will rate the cable against them. How we publish data →

Type designations by region

Buyers search for a supplier by the designation their own market uses. The codes listed against each construction above are the designations this family is ordered under in China; each is given for cross-reference only, and is published only where a supporting reference exists.

Type designations are given for cross-reference, so a specification written to IEC, GB, EN, DIN VDE, BS or GOST finds the right construction. Each designation is defined by the standard named beside it. Construction, standard edition and approval route are confirmed against your specification before an order is placed.

To quote we need

Send what you have of the following — a partial enquiry still lets us start, and we will tell you which answers are missing.

  • Which property the project calls for: flame retardant, fire resistant, or both
  • Test standard and class the specification cites, including duration where circuit integrity is required
  • Base construction — number of cores, cross-section, armour and screen
  • Whether halogen-free compounds are also required
  • The standard you work to, the quantity and the drum lengths
