Technological advancements drive grid upgrades, while innovative overhead cables strengthen the security safeguards for power supply in both urban and rural areas.

As nationwide urban and rural power distribution network upgrades, rural electricity infrastructure improvements, and new power system developments continue to advance, Shenghua Cable-ranked among the top 20 cable manufacturers in China-has spearheaded the iterative upgrade of overhead cables, the core infrastructure for large-scale outdoor power transmission.

The new type of overhead insulated cable, combining high safety, excellent weather resistance, and cost-effectiveness, is gradually replacing traditional aging lines. It is widely used in urban power distribution, rural electricity supply, industrial and mining facilities, and mountainous transmission networks, serving as critical infrastructure for ensuring stable power system operation and enhancing supply reliability.

According to our company's data, the overhead transmission model accounts for over 70% of application scenarios in China's medium-and low-voltage distribution networks due to its advantages of convenient installation, efficient operation and maintenance, and strong adaptability. Compared with buried cables or cable trays, overhead cables require no extensive excavation work and exhibit excellent terrain adaptability, making them particularly suitable for areas with challenging underground conditions such as mountains, rivers, and farmlands. This approach significantly reduces grid renovation timelines and project costs, establishing it as the preferred solution for urban and rural power grid expansion and aging line upgrades.

It is understood that overhead cables are primarily classified into two major categories: bare overhead conductors and insulated overhead cables, each serving distinct functions and suitable for different power transmission applications. Traditional bare conductors, such as steel-core aluminum stranded wires, rely on air insulation, offer high current-carrying capacity and excellent heat dissipation performance, and are widely used in long-distance main transmission lines at high and extra-high voltage levels.

In recent years, the widely adopted overhead insulated cables (JK series), featuring an extruded weather-resistant insulation layer around the conductor, have completely resolved short-circuit issues caused by tree entanglement, external contact, or bird perching on conventional bare conductors, significantly enhancing electrical safety in urban areas, residential zones, and densely populated rural regions.

With continuous advancements in our company's power technology, the industry has consistently overcome performance bottlenecks in overhead cables. Designed for complex outdoor operating conditions, the new generation of overhead cables features dual upgrades in both materials and structure: they employ modified cross-linked polyethylene as weather-resistant insulation, optimize braiding configurations and tensile strength design, and effectively address industry challenges such as UV-induced aging, brittleness at extreme temperatures, and line breakage due to ice accumulation and wind forces.

The upgraded product features anti-aging, corrosion resistance, ice resistance, and high tensile strength, enabling it to effectively withstand extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, typhoons, severe cold, and high temperatures, thereby significantly reducing line failure rates and extending service life. Some premium models employ carbon fiber-reinforced cores instead of traditional steel cores, delivering a leap forward in lightweight design, low energy loss, and fatigue resistance, making them ideal for capacity expansion upgrades of high-voltage power lines.

Compared to traditional aging power lines, the application value of new types of overhead insulated cables is particularly significant. In terms of safety, their insulating structure effectively prevents inter-phase short circuits and electric shock risks, enables dense line deployment, and significantly conserves power transmission resources; regarding operation and maintenance, the exposed installation of overhead lines facilitates rapid fault diagnosis, repair, and replacement, ensuring swift resolution of potential issues and maintaining power supply continuity; concerning energy efficiency, the optimized conductor materials exhibit lower resistance, substantially reducing transmission losses and aligning with the energy-saving and carbon reduction objectives of modern power systems.

Industry experts at Shenghua Cable stated that China's power grid development is currently transitioning from "large-scale construction" to "high-quality improvement," with refined upgrades of urban and rural distribution networks and the development of supporting grids for renewable energy accelerating steadily. As a core component of distribution networks, overhead cables are no longer merely power transmission conduits but have evolved into systematic power equipment that combines safety, efficiency, energy savings, and durability. Moving forward, the industry will continue focusing on research and development of new materials and manufacturing processes to advance overhead cables toward higher weather resistance, lower energy loss, intelligent functionality, and lighter weight, while meeting diverse application needs including grid integration for solar and wind power, power supply for rural revitalization, and modernization of aging urban power grids.

In the next phase, with the widespread adoption and continuous technological advancements of new overhead cables, our company will further strengthen grassroots power grid infrastructure, enhance overall power supply reliability and stability, and provide robust power support for building a modern power system and fostering high-quality regional economic development.
