Global Cable Outer Sheath Materials

Global Cable Outer Sheath Materials

Global Cable Outer Sheath Materials

1. Function of Cable Outer Sheath

The outer sheath protects conductors, insulation and shielding layers.

Main functions:

- Mechanical protection against tension, abrasion and impact.

- Environmental protection against water, moisture, oil, chemicals and UV.

- Safety improvement with flame retardant and low smoke performance.

2. Main Jacket Materials

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):

Low cost, easy processing and good flame performance. Used for power cables, control cables and building wires.

PE (Polyethylene):

Excellent waterproof and weather resistance. Used for outdoor, underground and communication cables.

XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene):

High temperature resistance and good aging performance. Used mainly for power cables.

LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen):

Low smoke and halogen free. Used in metro systems, airports, data centers and ships.

PUR/TPU (Polyurethane):

Excellent abrasion resistance, oil resistance and flexibility. Used for robotic and drag chain cables.

TPE/TPEE:

High flexibility and good low temperature performance. Used for flexible industrial cables.

Rubber Materials:

Including NR, CR, EPDM and silicone rubber for harsh environments.

Fluoroplastics:

PTFE, FEP, PFA and PVDF provide excellent high temperature and chemical resistance.

3. Material Selection

Buildings: PVC

Outdoor underground: PE/HDPE

Metro and airports: LSZH

Industrial automation: PUR/TPE

Robot drag chains: PUR/TPEE

High temperature equipment: Silicone/PTFE/FEP

4. Selection Factors

- Operating temperature

- Moisture and water conditions

- UV exposure

- Chemical corrosion

- Mechanical movement and abrasion

- Flame retardant requirements

- Service life and cost

Conclusion:

No single sheath material is suitable for all applications. The correct material should be selected according to voltage level, installation environment, temperature, mechanical requirements and international standards.
